Located just a short 20 minute ferry ride across Cleveland Bay from Townsville, Maggie Island is a great day trip or getaway for a few days. Colin and I popped over for the day in May 2023 and thought it would be a good idea to do the Forts Walk. We bought a day ticket for the bus service, less than $5 each to hop on and off as we pleased. We were loaded up with water and sunscreen, like all good North Queenslanders, and set off on the walk which is easy, but still needs a level of fitness. The walk is still being upgraded so there are areas that are closed off and of course, I got confused and we took a wrong turn. That’s cool – part of the fun.
Yep, still looking happy – we hadn’t set off on the wrong path at this stage.
Koalas are not native to Maggie Island, but the population plays an important role in the species survival.
So we were enjoying the views and the sign post to Florence Bay was just too appealing. Not to mention, the path was downhill. And it kept going down.
By the time we got to the bottom, we were given the option of going back uphill to return to the Forts Walk Junction, or, according to the sign, it was the same distance to go to Horseshoe Bay. That was our ultimate destination, so, not keen to go back up, we kept going to Horseshoe Bay. And of course, our nice flat walk began to go up. And it kept going up.
It was a great walk, but the beer at the end was well earned.
